Rock Drilling
Rock Drilling is undertaken using rotary percussion or compressed air drills for forming holes.
Rock drilling involves using a hammer action technique which vibrates the material loose with its tungsten carbide tips, which clears the hole as it proceeds. It's common use is in dowel bar insertion and resin anchors due to the rough sidewalls that are left once drilled. This roughened surface is preferred as epoxy resins have greater adherence to a textured surface.
In order to avoid the risks of Hand and Arm Vibration Syndrome we endeavour to use Automated Rock Drilling using a frame mounted air-powered rig with a vibrating hammer action. The drill and mast are attached to the arm of the machine and operated via a remote control unit attached to the operator’s waist.
Powered by the machine’s hydraulic system and a separate portable compressor, the rock drilling can be carried out free from Hand and Arm Vibration. These machines can drill holes vertically or horizontally of up to 50 mm in diameter and up to 305 mm in depth within one minute. This technique is widely used for drilling dowel bars, installing anchor holes and drilling into concrete prior to bursting.
