CA Drillers were appointed to deliver the Builder’s Work package in partnership with Morris & Spottiswood Ltd as part of the major refurbishment and CAT A/B fit-out of 33 Old Broad Street in London. The project required extensive structural modifications and service integrations to modernise the building while ensuring minimal disruption to the existing structure.
With expertise in diamond drilling, saw cutting, and structural alterations, CA Drillers played a key role in preparing the building for the installation of mechanical and electrical systems, as well as facilitating various construction activities across the site.
The project involved a wide range of structural cutting, drilling, and building works designed to support the refurbishment and fit-out of the building.
A significant portion of the works involved creating vertical and horizontal openings through brickwork, blockwork, and reinforced concrete. These openings were required to facilitate building services, ductwork, and access routes throughout the property.
The works were carried out using precision saw cutting and stitch drilling techniques to ensure accuracy and prevent structural damage.
To maintain the integrity of brick and blockwork penetrations, CA Drillers also supplied and installed prestressed concrete lintels, providing structural reinforcement where new openings were formed.
Additionally, core drilling operations were conducted in both vertical and horizontal orientations to create service penetrations for mechanical and electrical systems.
As part of the refurbishment works, CA Drillers installed a temporary propping system to support the building’s loading bay. This system ensured that the structure could safely accommodate bulk material deliveries during construction activities.
The team also carried out the construction of reinforced concrete plinths across the site. This included:
Supplying and installing shuttering systems
Concrete pouring, either by hand or pump
Power floating for surface finishing
Final striking off to achieve the required level and finish
These plinths were essential for supporting equipment and structural installations within the building.
CA Drillers undertook soft stripping works, which included the removal of redundant building elements such as old services, tiling, and steelwork.
Where openings were no longer required, blockwork and brickwork infills were installed to safely seal these areas.
In addition, vertical and horizontal service chases were formed throughout the building to allow for the integration of modern utilities and building systems.
Beyond specialist drilling and cutting services, CA Drillers also provided general labour support across the site. This included assisting with the relocation of materials and equipment, maintaining site tidiness, and ensuring smooth site operations.
The team also managed skip supply and waste removal, ensuring that construction debris was cleared efficiently and the site remained organised and safe for ongoing works.
Through their comprehensive range of services and collaborative approach, CA Drillers successfully supported the refurbishment and fit-out works at 33 Old Broad Street.
Their expertise in structural cutting, drilling, and builders’ work integration ensured that the building modifications were carried out efficiently while maintaining structural safety and project timelines.
The 33 Old Broad Street project demonstrates CA Drillers’ capability to deliver complex builder’s work packages on large commercial refurbishment projects. By combining specialist techniques with practical site support services, CA Drillers played an essential role in facilitating the successful completion of this major redevelopment project.
