Project Overview

The Crossrail project, now known as the Elizabeth Line, is one of the largest infrastructure developments in Europe, valued at £15.4 billion. The railway connects Reading and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east, running through 42 km of newly constructed tunnels beneath London.

CA Drillers were appointed to deliver specialist drilling, cutting, and concrete works within the newly constructed tunnels between Plumstead and Paddington. The total value of the works delivered by CA Drillers on this project was approximately £2.5 million.

Initial Scope of Work

CA Drillers commenced work within the tunnel network in June 2016. The initial scope involved carrying out intricate cutting works within a cross passage, followed by concrete repair works to restore structural integrity.

Due to the high-quality execution and expertise demonstrated on the project, the scope of works quickly expanded to include a wide range of additional services across the tunnel infrastructure.

Expanded Scope of Works

As the project progressed, CA Drillers undertook a significant number of additional construction tasks to support the installation of key tunnel systems.

These works included:

• Drilling thousands of holes for cable containment systems

• Drilling works for fire mains installation

• Installation works for the emergency walkway system

• Track sawing hundreds of metres of reinforced concrete

• Managing and overseeing the installation of 955m² of screed

These activities were essential in preparing the tunnel environment for mechanical, electrical, and safety infrastructure required for the Elizabeth Line.

Health & Safety Performance

Health and safety were a top priority throughout the project. Over the course of the works, the CA Drillers team successfully completed over 50,000 manholes within the tunnel network.

All tasks were carried out without a single incident or accident, resulting in one of the strongest health and safety records on the entire Crossrail project.

Project Outcome

Through their expertise in diamond drilling, track sawing, and structural works, CA Drillers played an important role in supporting the successful delivery of key infrastructure within the Crossrail tunnel system.
