FM Conway – The National Art Gallery

Project Overview

CA Drillers were appointed by FM Conway to deliver specialist concrete cutting and removal works at the National Art Gallery, one of the UK’s most prestigious cultural institutions.

The project required the careful removal of reinforced concrete structures while working within an environment that houses priceless artwork and sensitive exhibits. Due to the delicate surroundings, all operations had to be carried out using non-percussive methods to ensure that no vibration or disturbance could affect the gallery’s collection.

Through careful planning and the use of advanced cutting equipment, CA Drillers successfully completed the works safely, efficiently, and within the required timeframe and budget.

Scope of Work

The project involved the removal of several structural concrete elements across the site. This included:

  • Removal of approximately 250m² of reinforced concrete slabs, each measuring around 300mm thick

  • Demolition of a 6m² wheel wash area, extending up to 2.5 metres deep

  • Removal of an existing BT chamber, approximately 6m² in size and reaching depths of up to 3 metres

These works required a high level of precision to ensure the surrounding structure and environment were not impacted.

Project Challenges

One of the primary challenges of the project was the sensitive nature of the working environment. The National Art Gallery houses invaluable artwork, meaning any construction activity had to be conducted with extreme caution.

To protect the artworks and the building structure, the project required the use of low-vibration, non-percussive techniques. Additionally, vibration levels were closely monitored by the gallery’s technical team throughout the duration of the works.

Techniques & Equipment

CA Drillers utilised a range of advanced diamond cutting equipment to safely remove the concrete elements without causing structural vibration.

The equipment used included:

  • Diesel-powered floor saws for large slab cutting

  • Diamond track saws for deeper and more precise structural cuts

  • Diamond drilling equipment for controlled and accurate openings

These methods ensured precise concrete removal while maintaining a controlled working environment within the gallery.

Project Outcome

Through careful planning, specialised equipment, and a highly experienced team, CA Drillers successfully completed the concrete removal works without disruption to the gallery environment.

The project was delivered on time and within budget, demonstrating CA Drillers’ ability to undertake complex demolition and concrete cutting works within highly sensitive and prestigious locations.

Conclusion

The National Art Gallery project highlights CA Drillers’ expertise in precision concrete cutting and non-percussive demolition techniques. By maintaining strict safety standards and using advanced equipment, the team ensured the successful completion of this delicate project while protecting the integrity of the gallery and its valuable artwork.
